One step closer

Isaac Orlando, a Boy Scout with Troop 971 in West Branch, took one step closer to achieving his personal goal of becoming Ogemaw County’s newest Eagle Scout. One of the final steps that a Scout must take in order to achieve the status of Eagle Scout is, (according to the Scouting Handbook), “plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, school, or your community. The project must benefit an organization other than Boy Scouting.”

I feel that it is time that we learned more about our “female nurses” in the military during World War I.

The military nurses arrived in Europe before the American Expeditionary Forces. At the beginning of World War I, 403 women were on active duty in the Army Nurse Corps, founded in 1901. By Armistice Day on Nov. 11, 1918, 21,480 nurses had signed up and over 10,000 nurses had served overseas. The nurses had served with great distinction. Three of the nurses were awarded...
